Con un fare molto all’italiana saltiamo l’enorme fila davanti a Bill Sienkiewicz e lo troviamo rilassato, in formissima nella sua t-shirt nera; gli chiediamo se possiamo fargli qualche domanda mentre lui continua a firmare e fare sketch per la London Super Comic Convention. Bill sorride e anche i fans in coda dopotutto sono contenti di poter sentire le sue parole.

Filippo DOUbLe SHOt: Ciao Bill! Devo dirti subito che sono un po’ emozionato a parlare con te, perchè in Italia ho cominciato a considerare il fumetto una “cosa seria” proprio scoprendo le tue opere alla fine degli anni ’80. [Bill sorride] Dunque, hai rivoluzionato il mondo dei fumetti e sei stato un innovatore assoluto: credi ci sia un tuo possibile erede oggi, capace della stessa impresa?
Bill Sienkiewicz: Non credevo all’epoca di poter essere un rivoluzionario, né disegnavo con quello scopo. Non saprei dire chi potrebbe essere un innovatore, ma so che neanche lui si sentirà tale, non è una cosa che si può decidere di diventare. Ciò di cui sono sicuro però è che il futuro sarà nella commistione tra comics e multimedia perché il digitale ormai è la nuova frontiera, il nuovo “wild west”.

FDS: Su quale personaggio ti è piaciuto di più lavorare?
BS: Be’, io sono un “Batman guy” [i fans in coda esultano], mi piacciono questi personaggi oscuri, tenebrosi. Diciamo che loro mi attraggono di più. Tuttavia ho lavorato anche a figure più solari, positive [sorride] e mi è piaciuto molto lo stesso, perché sostanzialmente a me interessa disegnare, adoro farlo e per me il fumetto è un grande parco giochi in cui ho l’opportunità di fare ciò che amo. Quindi spesso non ha importanza su cosa lavoro, semplicemente amo disegnare.

FDS: Qualche personaggio su cui non hai ancora lavorato e che vorresti fare?
BS: Non saprei, devo dire che sono contento di ciò che fatto, e semmai ci fosse stata ancora qualche altra soddisfazione da togliermi in parte lo sto già facendo con il mio prossimo progetto. Infatti stiamo preparando qualcosa di nuovo utilizzando il digitale, ma per adesso non posso ancora scendere nei dettagli!

FDS: Grazie di tutto Bill!

(Dopo facciamo la foto di rito assieme e stavolta il ragazzo che sta aspettando con le copie di Moon Knight in mano comincia un po’ a sbuffare, ma una foto con una Leggenda dei comics può valere anche qualche fugace antipatia).

With a very italian attitude we skip the long line of fans waiting for Bill Sienkiewicz and we get to see him relaxed and smiling in a black t-shirt; we ask him if we can briefly talk to him while he keeps signing and drawing sketches during the London Super Comic Convention. Bill accepts and smiles and so do the fans in line: they are happy to hear what he says after all.

Filippo DOUbLe SHOt: Hi Bill! First of all I have to say I feel a bit overwhelmed to talk to you, because I started to think about comics as a “serious thing” thanks to your works at the end of the eighties. [Bill smiles] You’ve revolutionized the comics and you’ve been an absolute innovator: do you think there is a possible heir today, who’s capable of the same enterprise?
Bill Sienkiewicz: I didn’t consider myself a revolutionary at the time and neither I drew for this purpose. Actually I couldn’t say who will be the next innovator, but I know that he also is not considering himself like that, this is not a kind of thing one can decide to be. On the other hand I’m sure that the future will be in the mix of comics and multimedia, because the digital is becoming more and more the new “wild west” nowadays.

FDS: What character did you enjoy mostly to work on?
BS: Well, I’m a “Batman guy” [fans happily clamor], I like dark and obscure characters, they’re appealing. Yet I’ve worked on light and positive figures too and I liked it as well, because basically I’m concerned with drawing, I love to illustrate, and comic is a big playground for me. I’ve got the chance to do what I like, so in many cases it doesn’t matter what I work on, I just love drawing.

FDS: Is there any character you haven’t drawn yet that you’d like to?
BS: I don’t know, I have to say I’m happy with what I did so far, and if there was something else for me to achieve I’m kinda doing it with my next project. In fact we’re preparing something new using the digital technology, but I can’t be more specific yet, sorry!
